Pipe Smoking in our Culture
I am an unapologetic pipe smoker. For me, it is not an addiction but a great pleasure in my life. There are few things more relaxing than sitting out in my humble backyard on a Summer evening, reading a book with pipe and beverage in hand.
That said, let me share these 2 great articles I found linked in a forum: Washington Post and NY Sun.
If you smoke a pipe, these are must-read articles. If you don't smoke a pipe, this will give you a lot of insight into what it's about from a cultural perspective. Maybe you'll be inspired to try out this hobby. Go ahead and let me know if you want some advice on the subject.

mmmmmm, pipes.... that Wash Post article made me want to fire one up!
Hi, Andrew -
As a fellow puffer, I'm curious about a few things. As you have a young daughter, as do I, I wonder if you smoke around her. Does she like it? Does your wife smoke and, if not, what's her feelings about your (what I consider basically male) pleasurable habit?
Were you first a cigarette smoker, as were many, and when did you first became a pipe smoker? what was the main impetus?
I see you own at least one meerschaum, a gift from you wife (that basically answers my earlier question, I suppose, but does she like you to smoke around her?). Any other more interesting pipes, as the photos of your collection are from a few years ago?
Did you ever have orthodontia? Does your dentist have any comments on this indulgence (mine knows of it).
op68_1999: Good questions...
I do smoke around my daughter, but only outdoors in well-ventilated areas, and I make efforts to keep it away from direct contact with her. She is reason I stopped smoking in my office (in the house).
My daughter is 2, so she doesn't express much about my smoking, but she does seem to like it. I have to reminder that smoking is for "daddy only," or she would try to take a puff now and then.
My wife does not smoke, but tolerates it. She's usually not into kissing me after I've smoked, so I usually decide to smoke or not based on any, uh, other plans for the evening :) She doesn't hate my habit, but I generally try not to blow it in her face.
I have never been a cigarette smoker, but I have and still enjoy smoking cigars. I'm not an inhaler, and not addicted to nicotine. I was initially attracted to pipes as a cigar smoker looking to take it indoors for the winter without stinking up the place, but I've since made pipe smoking my main form of tobacco and enjoy it strictly outdoors.
I have 8 pipes: 2 cobs, a meer, and 5 briar pipes. The newest additions are a Savinelli churchwarden (a gift from a friend and fellow smoker), and a Peterson 150 style rusticated straight bulldog, part of a "club pipe" purchase with my virtual friends over at www.christianpipesmokers.org.
The only orthodontia I've had was a retainer in Jr HS and HS. I'm not much of a clamper, so I don't have issues with that. I tell my dentist so she can look for any early warning signs of oral cancers that can plague pipe smokers.
Thanks for reading.
Thanks; that was quick! There's an entry on YouTube - entered buy a young Czech guy who goes my rendelmann - entitled "Iam (no space) smoking my bulldog pipe." His French bulldog joins the scene.
I could see you with a churchwarden; I believe you already mentioned wanting one. You seem to have a strong hankering for old-fashioned, historic attire and I imagine it's all part of your interest - really liking the "pipe smoker image." I had wondered if your Dad smoked a pipe or perhaps a brother but it looks like no.
I tracked down that video... interesting. I don't think that pipe is really a bulldog. He's got that ring thing down too. Much easier to do indoors than outdoors.
My dad used to smoke a pipe a long time ago, but it was long before I have any memory of it. Unlike many people, I don't have any fond memories of some dear old relative puffing on a pipe, but I hope to leave that legacy with my family.
Hi, Andy.
Considering what you've written and linked to regarding tradition and gentlemanly fashion, you'd probably well appreciate the "Fedora Lounge" website, if you haven't already discovered it. I believe the address is simply: thefedoralounge.com.
Was just in London and had fabulous time around the Savile Row and Jermyn Street areas. Yes, I purchased some items. Great, great area for men's attire....
